MARY STREET GANDY COGSWELL, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away Friday, September 12, 2008 after a valiant journey of life. She was a divine inspiration to all of us during the good times and bad. During her illness, the past few years, she continued her unfailing dedication to her family and church, where she found great strength and peace. Mrs. Cogswell was born on February 13, 1925 in West Frankfort, Illinois. She moved to Memphis, TN when she was 18 years old where she worked at Central Station for the Illinois Central Railroad and attended Memphis State University, where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education and Counseling. Mrs. Cogswell retired from the City of Memphis School System in 1978. During her 24 years with the City School System, she taught second grade at Oak-haven, Sea Isle and Hanley Elementary Schools and was a school counselor at Dunbar and Riverview Elementary Schools. Following the death of her husband, retired Marine Gen. Charles L. Cogswell, Mrs. Cogswell called Kirby Pines Estates home, where she continued her caring and considerate ways to make the lives of those around her more pleasant. She leaves many friends at Kirby and we thank them all for the love and compassion they extended to our mother. Mrs. Cogswell is the former wife of Howard E. Street and Dalton Gandy, both of whom predeceased her. Our mother lives on in the hearts and memories of her sister, Virginia H. Granger; daughter, Mindy Faulkner; sons, Zack H. Street, Frank Cogswell of Folsom, LA, Chuck Cogswell of Waverly, Texas, Mike Cogswell of New York; eight grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held beginning at 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 15 at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue, with services to follow at 3 p.m. If there was a better word for love I would say it....You'll be in our Hearts. Our mother requested any memorial contributions be sent to her church home, Germantown Church of Christ, 8723 Poplar Pike, Germantown, TN 38138.
