LOCAL TEACHER KILLED IN AUTO-TRUCK CRASH NEAR HAMMON LAST SATURDAY
{{ This article was published in The Leedey Star ( Leedey, Oklahoma ) 27 Nov 1946, Wed, page 1. Newspapers.com }}
Rites for Mrs. J. A. Bailey to Be Thursday Afternoon at Highschool Auditorium
Funeral services for Mrs. J. A. Bailey, who was killed in a truck-auto collision two miles north of Hammon on Highway 34 last Saturday morning, will be held at the Leedey highschool auditorium Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The rites were delayed pending arrival of a niece from California.
Mrs. Bailey, third grade teacher in the local schools, was on her way to Elk City with her husband when the accident occurred. Just after they had crossed the river bridge several hundred yards north of the Hammon junction, a 1941 V-8 truck, driven by Buel Taylor, struck the rear of the Chevrolet coupe in which they were riding, overturning it and pinning Mr. and Mrs. Bailey underneath.
The accident took place about 11 o'clock. The impact, in addition to upsetting the Bailey car, had turned it around and shoved it off the highway. Mrs. Bailey, sitting on the right side, was thrown across her husband and both were pinned beneath the wreckage in such a manner that Bailey, who was not hurt, was unable to extricate them without help. Mrs. Bailey's skull was fractured.
The M. J. Irwin ambulance was called but before it could reach the scene other help had arrived and the accident victims were started on their way to an Elk City hospital. However, the woman succumbed after only a few miles of the distance had been covered.
Taylor, who had received an honorable discharge from the army earlier this year, had purchased the truck only about two or three weeks ago. A highway patrolman who investigated the accident said a manslaughter charge would be filed.
Mrs. Bailey, a teacher in the local schools since 1941, has lived in the Leedey community practically all her life. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Barker, who reside in the Liberty Center community.
Immediate survivors besides her husband and her parents are four sisters: Mrs. Zelma Dukes and Mrs. Jessie Carpenter of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Etola Snell of Holly, Colo., and Mrs. Emery Bailey of Leedey; and one brother, Luther Barker, also of Leedey. A host of other relatives also survive.
Burial will be in the Shirley cemetery, with Rev. J. I. Clinton, pastor of the Leedey First Baptist church, S.B.C., in charge of both the funeral and burial service.

OBITUARY
Elizabeth Barker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Barker, was born at Mountain View, Okla., June 26, 1904, and departed this life on November 23, 1946, at the age of 42 years, 4 months and 27 days.
On December 24, 1925, she was united in marriage with Alfred Bailey and established a home near Leedey.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Alfred Bailey; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Barker, and one brother, Luther Barker, of Leedey; four sisters, Mrs. Zelma Dukes and Mrs. Jessie Carpenter of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Jess Snell of Holly, Colo., and Mrs. Emory Bailey of Leedey; also her mother-in-law, Mrs. Ada Bailey, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Mrs. Bailey attended school at Liberty Center and Leedey; she received her Bachelor's degree from Southwestern Institute of Technology, Weatherford, Okla., in 1940.
For the last 20 years, Mrs. Bailey had taught school in Leedey and surrounding communities. At the time of her death she was teaching the third grade in the Leedey school. She has made for herself a living memorial in the lives of the boys and girls with whom she worked.
When Elizabeth was a young girl, she converted and became a member of the Missionary Baptist church. She enjoyed life most when she could do something to make the members of her family or her friends happy.
As we come to pay tribute to Elizabeth, we are reminded of the following poem---one we know she loved and read often:

Sunset and Evening Star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home,
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark.
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
