Ralph Abbott, 35, of Long Branch, former resident of Red Bank and well known Red Bank high school athlete of about a decade ago, was killed at his service station at Long Branch Tuesday when a heavy truck tire struck him in the forehead while he was inflating a tire.
Mr. Abbott passed away in Monmouth Memorial hospital about two hours after the accident. According to Long Branch police, he was engaged in inflating the tire when the rim worked loose and struck him directly above the eyes.
Mr. Abbott was part owner of Cook & Abbott service station at Broadway and Norwood avenue. He had resided at Long Branch for the past eight years. He was born at Red Bank and was the son of Clifton and Margaretta Brooks Abbott of Oakland street. The father is employed by the New York & Long Branch railroad.
Mr. Abbott, known in his high school days as "Horsey," was graduated in 1929. He played football at Red Bank high during his four years and was named on the New Jersey all-state team in his senior year. He also starred on the track team.
With his friend and teammate in high school days, Benjamin Cook, Jr., son of Policeman and Mrs. Benjamin Cook of Red Bank, he entered the service station business soon after leaving school, and two years ago opened a second station in North Long Branch. He served at one time as a policeman at Shrewsbury.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Chauncette Waclaski Abbott, and a daughter, Chauncette.
Mr. Abbott was a member of Oceanic fire company of Long Branch, the Officers association of the Long Branch fire department, Mystic Brotherhood lodge of Masons and Trinity Episcopal church of Red Bank. He was a deputy zone air raid warden. Before moving to Long Branch he was a member of Red Bank Hook and Ladder company.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at St. James church at Long Branch with Rev. Herbert S. Craig, rector of Trinity church, and Rev. Morton A. Barnes, rector of St. James church, officiating.
