William Whitfield Bates was born at Waterloo, Ohio, March 11, 1863 and departed this life at his home near Tulare, CA on June 27, 1930. As a boy he moved with his parents to Virginia where they lived for about five years. **(near his grandfather, William G. Bates)
From there they moved to Wisconsin where he grew to manhood in the LaFarge area. He united with the United Brethren Church and for some years was a minister of the gospel in that church and later in the Free Methodist Church. In 1893 he was pastor of the Free Methodist Church at Fond du Lac, WI. Here he was united in marriage with Miss Ina Gilbert (aka Ina Fort) on March 1, 1893.
Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn their loss, 3 brothers and 4 sisters in Wisconsin. Preceding him in death are two brothers, Patrick Bert and James Elliot Bates.
Since 1923 he has made his home near Tulare, CA. He was very regular in his attendance at the service of the church, always taking a lively interest in its welfare. for ten days before his death, he was attending the annual camp meeting at Santa Cruz. He took a great interest in the meeting and seemed to enter into a rich experience and close relationship with his Lord. Funeral services were conducted by this writer, Roy V. Swift and assisted by Rev. H.A. Hammer and Rev. Walter Gardner. Interment at Tulare.

William Whitfield Bates, 67, passed away at home on June 27, 1930 after a week's illness of heart trouble. He had resided in the Tulare District the past three years and was a partner of Jack Thorpe in the building business. Bates is survived by the widow, Mrs. Ina Bates, To this union were born the following children: four sons; William R. Bates and Rolly H. Bates of Wilder, Idaho, Sharon, at home, Francis S. Bates of Lancaster, CA; and 3 daughters: Mrs. L. P. (Bethel) Johnson of Lindsay, Mrs. M. (Beulah) Daggett of Ivanhoe and Alta E. Bates at home. Also remembered is a daughter, Ina Carmel who died. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Rice Chapel with burial at the Tulare Cemetery.
