Prominent Rancher Of Fairview Dies Of Heart Ailment

Funeral services were held under the direction of Bp. Darrel A. Hoopes Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Fairview LDS Ward Chapel for H.E. Child, 72, prominent citizen-rancher of Fairview and deputy assessor of Lincoln County, who died Sunday evening of a heart attack at the Star Valley LDS Hospital in Afton. Mr Child had suffered a coronary occlusion last week and was admitted to the hospital. He appeared to be making a satisfactory recover.
A capacity crowd of friends and relatives, including many from outside the valley, was in attendance at the services. Pres. William L. Killpack of the Idaho Falls Temple was one of the speakers. Other speakers were Bp. Hoopes and J. Fred Brown. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery with the dedication of the grave by Bp. D'Orr Child.
Horace Ezra Child was born at Plain City, Utah on Sept 24, 1884, a son of Orval R. Child and Sarah Uridnda Rawson, being the eleventh child of a family of 13 children. His parents moved to Star Valley in 1889 while he was four years of age. His early life was spent in Fairview on his father's farm and dairy located on the West Hills near Fairview. His father died while he was twelve and he assisted his mother and sisters during his youth. He attended the Fairview school which consisted of one teacher teaching all grades in a small log school house. His education was augmented somewhat by his taking instructions from an elocutionist who spent a winter or two here.
On Sept 14, 1905 he married Eliza Jane Taggart in the Logan Temple. To this union were born eleven children of whom two sons died at birth and one daughter, LaRee Child Chadwick, died at the age of 30. with her husband, Delbert Chadwick, and three daughters surviving.
They lived in Fairview for eight years and then in 1913 moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming where he worked as mine foreman for the Kemmerer Coal Company until the spring of 1917. At this time he moved his family back to Fairview and acquired his present ranch on Spring Creek. Also at that time he homesteaded 640 acres additional grazing land in the Spring Creek area. In about 1920 he and his family moved into the old family home, part of which is still located on the Marvin Rich property and is still being used as the Post Office. In 1922 Jane Child was appointed Postmistress, a position which she occupied until her death in 1928. They also operated a small store in connection with the post office.
In 1929 he and his six unmarried children moved the present home onto the Spring Creek ranch and lived there. On Sept 2, 1929 he married Leona Eskelson Taggart, the widow of Oliver Taggart who was the brother of his first wife, Eliza Jane. With Leona's three children and his six, they endured the many hardships of the depression.
Ez as he was known by all his many friends, was deputy assessor for more than 30 years and was acting in this capacity at the time of his death. His traveling the first years of this work was on horseback throughout the upper valley. Some of the older people will remember the familiar sight of his assessing bag and books slung over the saddle horn or over his shoulder. He helped make a living for his large family by doing some trapping, a little freighting, canyon work, etc. along with operating his ranch. He raised a very fine garden each year. It was always one of the finest in Star Valley and afforded him much pride and great pleasure. He won many prizes at the Lincoln County Fair and State Fair each year with his garden products.
Ez was a very outstanding baseball pitcher and player. While living at Kemmerer his pitching prowess was so widely known that he was offered an opportunity to play baseball professionally.
He was a member of the first Fairview band which was organized in 1897 when he was thirteen years old. H has been aq member ever since this time and during past several years has been responsible for getting the band organized for the annual Fairview 24th of July Pioneer Day Celebration.
He was very active in dramatics and was a member of the first Fairview Dramatics Club and became a director or the club for a number of years.
Ez was a very active worker in the Democratic Party. His father was an active Republican.
He was a lifetime member of the LDS Church and for the past fifteen years was a very active ward member. His work with the senior Aaronic Priesthood was outstanding and he was instrumental in several people becoming active in the church and going to the temple. He was a Sunday School and a Ward Teacher.
Ez and Leona made many trips to the temples and for the past few years have usually averaged two or three trips per month.
Ez was characterized by his great tolerance. He could always see the good in all people and overlooked the bad. He tried not to talk about people and never permitted his children to do so within his hearing unless good was being said. he was generous with his time and means and supported worth while civic and church projects to his fullest ability. He loved people very much and had great sympathy and understanding for their problems. His disposition was happy and cheerful. When he was a mine foreman at Kemmerer he was loved and respected by all of his employees and his resignation was accepted with great reluctance by his employers.
Surviving are his widow, Leona T. Child; four daughters Mrs Marvin (Leora) Rich; Mrs Lionel (Louise) Frome, Mrs Lafe (Shirley) Dana and Mrs Lloyd (Aleen) Edgren of Centerville, Calif.; four sons Horance, D'Orr, Ralph and Doyle. One stepdaughter, Mrs Eugene (Madeline) Anderson; two step-sons, Ned and Dean Taggart; thirty-five grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren; two sisters, Luella Wilkes Blacker of Rupert, Idaho and Elva C. Reed also of Rupert.
