Sylvia Mae Ehlers was born April 2, 1917 in Newton Township, Miami, Ohio; one of seven children born to George William Ehlers and Susannah Mae (Bashore) Ehlers. She attended high school in Ohio. She married Luther "Kai" Furlong who worked for the government, in Richmond, Indiana. They had 47 years together and were blessed with four children, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mae and Kai came to Oklahoma when he was transferred here with his job. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her favorite song was "Your Are My Sunshine". She volunteered with the Salvation Army and was involved with the Native Americana Rights Fund (NARF) and Daughters of the Nile.
Her words of wisdom for those who wish to become a centenarian: "ATTITUDE".
Mae was inducted into the Centenarian Hall of Fame on June 2, 2017.
