Alexander was the sixth of nine children, and the fourth of six sons, of William Foster and Elizabeth Dean. Alexander was married to Nora Lucas on May 11, 1893 in San Francisco, California. Alexander and Nora had the following children: Ruth B. Foster, Alexander L. Foster, Lester C. Foster, Angeline M. Johnson, Mary E. 'Betty' Horner, Beverly C. Foster, Donald M. Foster, and Lenore F. Foster.
