OBIT: Northwest Tribune - November 10, 1893 - page 3 - Col. 3

A Lady Pioneer Departed
Emily E. McLain after a lingering illness passed away Sabbath morning, Nov. 5th, 1893, in her 49th year.
She had resided in Montana for Twenty-three years and the greater part of that time in Bitter Root valley. She anticipated the coming of the Messenger, made all arrangements for her funeral and told her daughter she was perfectly satisfied.
Her husband, Mr. J. P. McLain, five sons and one daughter, the wife of Mr. D. R. McClay, are left to mourn their great loss. The funeral was held at the M. E. church Tuesday last at 11 a.m. at Carlton, Rev. I. N. Smith officiating.
Mrs. McClain has a host of friends among the early settlers of Montana, many of whom she aided and sheltered during pioneer life together with new comers who were welcome sharers of her hospitality, all of whom will learn with deep regret of her earthly demise.
The Tribune joins her host of friends in offering condolence to her bereaved relatives.

Typed as printed with spelling errors etc. Paper was printed in Stevensville Montana.
A special thank you to the Missoula Library for their help with this obit.

Death of Emily E. McClain
At her late home, Carlton, Mont., Nov. 5, of heart disease, Mrs. Emily E. McClain, aged 49 years. She leaves a husband and six children to mourn her loss. Mrs. McClain was one of the pioneers of Montana, coming to this country in 1869, where she has since resided. She was known and respected throughout Montana, and many are the friends who will learn with regret of her early departure. For years she has been a sufferer and the last five months of her life were of great affliction, which she bore with almost unexampled patience and resignation. She was a member of the M.E. church, and her hands were ever ready to minister to those in need. Loved and respected by all who knew her, her loss will be keenly felt by the entire community whose sympathies rest with the bereaved family.
The funeral services, held at the Carlton church, were conducted by the presiding pastor, Rev. Smith, in the presence of a large assemblage of friends gathered to pay their last respects to her who, though
Gone from among us has not lived in vain,
Early departed, her memory green should e'er remain.
