Leona Thora (Larsen) Petersen, the daughter of Godtfred and Jensena (Petersen) Larsen, was born east of Ruskin, NE on a farm October 12, 1919.

She passed away Friday November 18, 2005 at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, NE at the age of 86 years.

Leona was baptized November 9, 1919 by Pastor L. Jensen at the Danish Lutheran Church of Ruskin and was confirmed on June 3, 1934 by Pastor Nielsen.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church until moving to Hastings in the fall of 1981, when she joined the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Leona grew up in the Ruskin area and attended District 28 country school and then graduated from Ruskin High School in 1937.

She was united in marriage to Alvin Petersen August 21, 1938 at the Danish Lutheran Church. They lived their married life in Ruskin. This union was blessed with two children, Berwyn and Jeanelle.

Leona’s family was very important to her. She was always involved in family gatherings, birthdays, baptisms, holidays, sporting events, musicals, ball games, even in all kinds of weather.

Leona was an active volunteer all her life. She was involved in the Gray Ladies, Ruskin Woman’s Club, singing in the choirs, Bethany women’s groups, Mary Lanning Hospital, Red Cross and cancer volunteer and the Martha Circle. She enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, singles club, Red Hatters and meeting friends at McDonald’s for breakfast.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Godtfred and Sena, her husband Alvin in 1968, and one brother, Gifford.

She is survived by her son, Berwyn and wife Betty of Hebron, daughter Jeanelle Brinegar and husband Gary of Carleton; 8 grandchildren: Lynne Wiedel and husband Jerry of Belvidere, Kristine Evans and husband Jeff of Lenexa, KS Brenda Hahn and husband Mark of Paxton, Stewart Brinegar and wife Kristen of Carleton, DeeAnn Petersen and husband Wayne of Ruskin, Ken Petersen and wife Janet of Carleton, LaRee Ahlers and husband Roger of Belgrade and Gail Petersen of Omaha. 23-great-grandchildren: Joshua Wiedel and wife Miranda of Belvidere, Erin Wiedel of Seward, Becky, Samuel, Samantha, Hannah Wiedel, Tionna and Siraya of Belvidere; Dietrich, Preston and Grace Brinegar of Carleton, Taylor and Brylie Hahn of Paxton; Jacob and Emma Ahlers of Belgrade; Andrea, Emily, Amanda and Daniel Petersen of Ruskin, Sena Petersen of Carleton; Jason Bargen and wife Gabriel of Kansas City, KS; Matt Bargen and wife Robin of Hardy and Casey Bargen of Hastings. 2 great-great grandchildren, Wyatt Wiedel of Belvidere and Taylor Bargen of Hardy. Brother Arne Larsen and wife Esther of Hebron, NE sister Myrna Petersen of Norwalk, CA and sister-in-law Myrna Larsen of Ruskin.

Memorial services were held on Monday, November 21, 2005 at 10:00 am at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, with Pastor John Ross officiating, organist Madeline Peterson. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 21 at 2:30 pm at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, NE with Pastor Evey Phillips officiating. Congregational songs were “How Great Thou Art” and “Beautiful Savior”, “Old Rugged Cross”. Andrea, Emily and Amanda Petersen sang “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry”. Dee Ann Petersen was pianist and Dorcas Judy was the organist.

Pallbearers were Ken Petersen, Gail Petersen, Stewart Brinegar, Jerry Wiedel, Jeff Evans, Mark Hahn, Roger Ahlers, and Wayne Petersen. Visitation was at Deshler Memorial Funeral Home in Deshler on Sunday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Interment was in Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin, NE.
