The son of William & Susan Margaret (Rummell) Dice, he married Barbara Ann Gloss Shuman and fathered David A. (b. 05/20/55), Margaret Ellen (b. 08/28/56), Lewis Edward (b. 08/26/58), Anna Catherine (b. 05/20/60 - married Wallace Patterson), Emma Jane (b. 11/20/61 - married Charles W. Moses), Marion A. (b. 04/01/63), Alice May (b. 10/31/66 - married Daniel Sherman Diehl), Lillian J. (b. 10/31/67 - married Edward F. Oyler), Benjamin Franklin (b. 11/22/68), Elizabeth (b. 11/02/70), Samuel H. (b. 09/14/71), Clara Alcesta (b. 08/25/73), Harvey C. (b. 01/28/75), Rachel A. (b. @1877), Mary (b. 12/25/81, d. 01/03/82). and Ida (b. @1882). In 1860, he was a carpenter living with his family in Jackson, Will County, Illinois, and stood 5' 9" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-seven in Jackson July 26, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Joliet August 30 as a private with Co. B, 100th Illinois Infantry. On June 30, 1864, he transferred to Co. D, 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteer Engineers, and promoted to artificer January 1, 1865. He honorably discharged with his company June 30, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee.


By 1870, he was back in Pennsylvania living with his family in St. Thomas Township, Franklin County. He died at his daughter Anna's home in Stoufferstown from "prostatitis" with "senility" a contributing factor, his son David dying suddenly just a few hours before Lewis's funeral. His death certificate claims an 1834 birth year.
