Wynan's Vault -- Many of us pass by this old landmark daily without recognizing its historical value. This is a stone burial vault, located to the left of the C. E. Ingalls' home and easily seen from Foothill Boulevard. The stone was originally brought from China for the purpose of constructing a burial place for the Wynans, who were relatives of Sam Brannan, developer of Calistoga. Several years ago Harry Patten purchased the property. He tried to remove the vault, but after blasting two gaping holes in the sides, abandoned the project. It would have taken so much gunpowder that it would have blown up more than the vault itself and would have been too dangerous.

In the vault Patten found an iron casket of Morman design, says I.C. Adams, local historian, in which were the remains of Sam Brannan's son. Bodies in the vault were taken to St. Helena.
