The Record of Death and Interment stated John M. Holmes was first buried in Lot 1624, Row 2, Grave 2 in the Laurel Grove Cemetery, after having died in Hospital Number 234, and later reinterred in Section 23, Grave Number 2072 in the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. John was a brother to Garnett and James R. Holmes who also served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union). James was known to have previously served in the 13th Alabama Cavalry (Confederate) prior to service in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union).
