Hansford J. McGehee enrolled as a private in the Confederate Army on 27 May 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi. He was a member of Company E of the 16 Regiment of Mississippi for the duration of the war. He was wounded several times, and suffered from rheumatism and something spelled "Furonclale". He suffered a contusion and was captured defending the Jefferson Davis home on 21 August 1864. He was released on 15 March 1865 as part of a prisoner of war exchange. He was confined to the hospital several times: in Manassas; and in Howard Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia; and in the Confederate Soldiers of America Hospital in Farmville, Virginia
Hansford married Martha Gardner McGehee, on 6 Aug 1863. Martha Gardner had first married George McGehee, first cousin to Hansford McGehee. After George's death, Martha married Hansford.
Hansford raised the two children Martha had with George, named Georgiana and Ida.
Hansford and Martha had six children:
