Hannah Gifford comes from a long line of Giffords living and buried around Allens Neck Cemetery. She married Solomon Howland in 1861. They had eight children and only two lived into adulthood. Only one, Maurice had children. Hannah and Solomon lived in Vineland, NJ from about 1863-1871, when they returned to MA. In 1876 they lived on a farm on Main Rd. in Westport just north of Adamsville Rd (south of Partner's Book Store and cafe). In 1880 they moved to Fairhaven, MA. Her husband died in 1884. On 4/17/1897 she bought a fairly large home at 532 Old County Rd in Westport (At the Head) for $120. She lived there with her young son Maurice, her sister and boarders. The house burned after Hannah's death and after the family sold it. Another house now stands in roughly the same spot. Hannah died of pneumonia at her home and was buried with many generations of her family and her husband in Allens Neck Cemetery.
