Son of Samuel Barr (1798 - 1864) and Rachel Weaver (1808 - 1862). Husband of Cynthia A. Smith Barr. He was mustered into Company C, 11th West Virginia Infantry, December 22, 1861 and appointed Sergeant December 24, 1861. He was promoted sergeant major June 1, 1863 was promoted second lieutenant November 15, 1864, in Company A same regiment; Left to die on battlefield at Winchester, Va., 25 July 1864. Was nursed back to life by the kind hands of Southern women. When able, was taken to Libby Prison where he was exchanged and taken to hospital at Annapolis, Md. Union.
