He was born July 31, 1921, in Burrton to Adolph Andrew and Clara Christine (Goebel) Auernheimer. They preceded him in death.
A 1939 graduate of Halstead High School, he earned an associate's degree from Reedley Junior College in Reedley, Calif.; a bachelor's degree from Bethel College in North Newton; and a master's degree from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.
He also served three years in Civilian Public Service. On Aug. 26, 1948, he married Rosetta L. Unruh in Halstead. She survives of Moundridge.
He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Halstead. Other survivors include sons, Ron (Marilyn) Auernheimer and Doug Auernheimer, both of Halstead, and John (Janet) Auernheimer of Moundridge; a daughter, Darlene (Mike) Powers of Newton; grandchildren, Paul (Julia) Kaufman of Sacramento, Calif., Jason Auernheimer of Salina, Justina (Allen) Graham of Moundridge, Laura (Layton) Guggemos of Tehachapi, Calif., and James Powers of Newton; and one great-granddaughter, Brenna Kaufman of Sacramento.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Jacob, Walter and Arthur Auernheimer; and sisters, Florence Gomez, Selma Auernheimer and Anna Pankratz.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Mennonite Church in Halstead, with the Rev. Cleo Koop officiating.
A private family inurnment will be at Halstead Cemetery in Halstead.
Memorials may be given to First Mennonite Church or Halstead Historical Society in care of Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead, which is in charge of arrangements.
