Exactly two years after the death of James Sherman, Sarah married James Maxfield, a widower then of Walnut Creek, Brown County, Kansas. She had two children by Maxfield, Clarissa and Francis before she was, seemingly abandoned in Holton in 1869 or 70. She married William Athey in 1873.
