Born in Paris, Mo., she graduated with distinction from the University of Missouri 1931 with degrees in journalism and history. She worked as a feature writer for the Kansas City Star until her marriage in 1946 to journalist Robert Lawrence Piper of Cherokee, Kan. She received a master's degree from Butler University, and worked as a primary school teacher in Indianapolis, Ind., public schools until she retired. The Pipers moved to Chapel Hill in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Hart Ericson; two grandchildren who live in Chapel Hill; a stepson, Robert Piper of Shawnee, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Elaine Reussner of Leawood, Kan.; and four step-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be held for the family on Friday at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
