Husband of Sarah Elizabeth Dunlavy (1852-1937). Son of James Dunlavy and Lucinda (Murray) Dunlavy. Father of Ida Adell and Lucille M. Dunlavy. John was a Veteran of the Union army in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. K, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry on October 28, 1862. He then transferred to Co. H., 13th Missouri Cavalry Volunteers on September 8, 1864 and was discharged on July 31, 1865 at Ft. Zarah, Kansas.
