REIFEL, LEONARD HERMAN

Leonard Herman Reifel, 85, of Payette, formerly of Weiser, died Thursday, March 31, 1998, at a Payette care center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (daylight savings time) Sunday, April 5, at the Weiser Community Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser, under the direction of Thomason funeral Home, Weiser.

Leonard was born Dec. 17, 1912, at Paola, Kan., the son of George and Minnie Klavon Reifel. He attended high school in Paola, then the University of Kansas, graduating from both St. John's College in 1935 and Southwestern College at Winfield, Kan., in 1936. He did graduate study at Iliff Seminary, Denver and Denver University, Missouri School of Religion and the University of Missouri, Colorado State College of Education, Greeley Colo. The degree, doctor of Divinity, was conferred on him by Bishop Williams School of Religion, Western University, Kansas City, Kan., on June 5, 1941.

He was married to Lila Anderson on Dec. 15, 1934. To this union one son and three daughters were born.

Dr. Reifel served churches in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio, Missouri and Idaho. Dr. Reifel married Loretta Roose on June 28, 1964, at Sedalia, Mo.

He was pastor of the Weiser Community Church, 1966-'77. He was pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, Payette, 1968-'85. Following his retirement in 1985 he was made "pastor emeritus" of St. John's. He celebrated 50 years in Christian Ministry on Sept. 15, 1985. Dr. Reifel came out of retirement to preach at St. John's until ill health forced his permanent retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta of Payette; four children, Ronald G. Reifel of Aurora, Colo., Mrs. Leonard (Delores) Slyter of Preston, Md., Mrs. Ken (Nancy) Swords of Tallahassee, Fla., Mrs. Barry (Norma) Martyn of New Orleans, La.; eight grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ron (Andrea) Whitehead of Raytown, Mo., and Mrs. Dave (Christine) Krutsinger of Evergreen, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

The family suggests memorials be made in his name to the Community Church of Weiser, 240 E. Main, Weiser 83672; and St. John's United Church of Christ, 346 N. 4th St., Payette 83661.
