Son of Charles Eugene and Hester Ann("Anna" Barrett) Vought. His mother died in childbirth so his given name was left as "A" honoring her. He was raised by many relatives until his sister, Carrie Clytie Vought, was old enough to purchase a home for their father and them. Barrett worked from an early age on farms and was one of the first men to use a threshing machine in the wheat fields around the Battle Creek area. He raised his family on a farm near Augusta, Michigan.
Barrett married Agnes Theresa Nason. He is survived by sons Eugene "Junior" Barrett (Helen) Vought and Donald Leo "Jack" (Henrietta "Pat") Vought; daughters Verna Jean (William) McDonald and Anna Marie (James) Wright; and adopted sons William (Kathleen) Vought and Carl Vought, all of Battle Creek. He is also survived by grandchildren: Elaine, Nancy Elizabeth, Ivan, Clytie Jean, Donald, Lyle, Robert, Peggy, Janice, Richard, Susan, Cathy, Judith, Kathy, Theresa and Sandra.
"A" Barrett Vought served in World War I in the Polar Bear unit in Russia. While in the U.S. Army his name was listed as Albert because they did not acknowledge a single initial as a first name.
