"Enlisted as a private in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry, N. G. on July 23, 1917. Reported for duty at Lexington, Kentucky on Sept 26, 1917. After preliminary training in Lexington, was sent to Camp Shelby, Miss, with the 3rd Kentucky Infantry. Later was promoted to Sergeant in the Q.M.C., and transferred to 38th Division Headquarters for duty in the office of Capt. H. A. Gardner, the officer in charge of Quartermaster Supplies for the 38th Division. In time was promoted to Sgt. 1st Class and on July 23, 1918 was selected as one of 3 men to be sent to the Quartermaster Officers Training School in Jacksonville, Fla. Was soon commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Q.M.C. on Aug 14, 1918 and sent to Camp Humphries, Va for duty as Quartermaster Supply Officer of the Engineer Officers Training School, where I served until my discharge on Jan 4, 1919."
