Mr. Bates was born on Sept. 1, 1918, at Rigby, a son of John Stephen and Ida Florence Jones Bates. He attended school in Rigby, graduating from high school in 1938. In the fall of 1938 he moved to Weiser where he attended the National Youth Administration School and learned the plumbing trade. He married Evelyn Benson of Weiser on Dec. 30, 1939, at Garfield, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in October of 1940 at the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. He worked at the Boise Air Base as a plumber until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 6, 1942. He was discharged from the service on Dec. 31, 1945.
When he returned from the service, he went into business with his father-in-law, Aaron C. Benson at Weiser. The business was known as Benson and Bates Plumbing, Heating and Electric Co. They were engaged in this business for 32 years. Due to health reasons they sold their business in 1975. He moved to Boise on Nov. 1, 1976, where he went to work for the City of Boise as a city plumbing inspector, a position he held at the time of his death.
He was a past president of the Lions Club in Weiser; a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #9088 of Weiser, where he was commander of that post for three consecutive years; and commander of District 5, VFW, for one year. He was chairman of the draft board in Weiser during its last few years of existence until it was dissolved by the president of the United States. He was an active member of the LDS Church throughout his life. He had served as a scoutmaster; filled a two-year Stake Mission for the Weiser Stake; served as ward clerk for the Weiser 2nd Ward; served as Weiser Ward YMMIA president; was a counselor in the Weiser Stake YMMIA presidency; and was a Sunday School teacher at different times. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Boise 29th Ward where he had served as High Priest group leader and a counselor in the Sunday School superintendency. He also spent time at St. Luke's Hospital for the Boise East Stake concerning hospital visitations.
