To pay a tribute of respect to our loved and lost is always a painful task, but the angel of death has come into our community and called, and this aged mother answered the summons, and the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it.
Harriett Francis DeHart was born August 24, 1832 and died March 9, 1903, age 70 years, 6 months and 16 days. She was united in marriage to Charles Bay, March 11, 1858. To this union were born five children, three of whom with the father have preceded her to that home beyond. In early life she gave her heart to God, and ever afterward lived a faithful and consistent Christian. At the time of her death she was one of the oldest members of the Pisgah Methodist church, and was always interested in the prosperity of her church and for the uplifting and betterment of anything that was for good. There are none who have known and loved her but can think of some kind act bestowed by her hands or prompted by her goodness of heart. And these memories will live forever in the hearts of all. It is hard to lose such a dear friend, but we know this trial comes to all. Strong and weak, high and low, rich and poor alike must be cut down by the silent reaper of death. Although her illness was of short but painful duration, and that she suffered death many times, yet not one murmur was ever heard, but so patient and loving were those hours of suffering borne, so happy in Jesus and ever trusting in her Savior, that the thought of death seemed no burden to her. She leaves two children, James Bay of Tipton, Ind., and Mrs. Samuel Barnhill of Bartholomew county, besides many relatives and friends. But their loss is her gain, and she leaves to them the example of a long and useful life spent in the Master’s service.
The funeral services were conducted at the Pisgah Methodist church, Wednesday, March 11, at 10 a.m. by her pastor, Rev. Harvey. The remains were laid to rest in the quiet city of the dead at the Freeman cemetery, J. M. Breeding, funeral director.
