He married Mary Barney (1857-1840), daughter of Elisha and Polly Barney.
Spencer's Revolutionary War enlistment from Taunton, Mass., began with an assignment "to help prevent the escape of Highlanders and other prisoners from the Taunton jail during the alarm of Dec. 8, 1776." Later, also from Taunton, he served on a "secret expedition" and was mustered out on Oct. 29, 1777.
Spencer's earlier tour service -- from Stoughtonham--seems relatively uneventful and to have consisted of several short assignments.
We are told at one point that Spencer Lyon, a soldier in Capt. Samuel Payson's Company, Col. Joseph Read's Regiment, had not received a coat. The records say the oversight was quickly rectified by payment to Lyon made on Jan. 2, 1776.
Spencer Lyon and Mary (Barney) Lyon had nine children, the second one of whom was a son, Elisha, born in Woodford in 1795, and died in 1836.
This brings us to the second of the two gravestones pictured in The Banner's Feb. 3 article; this gravestone is that of Elisha Lyon's first wife, Rhoda Cutler, whom he married in Marlboro, VT., May 23, 1796, who died in Woodford on June 30, 1828. She was the daughter of Josiah Cutler and Betsey (Allen) Cutler.
After Rhoda died, Elisha married 2nd in December 1829, Rhoda's sister, Sally Cutler.
He died in Bennington on Feb. 3, 1836. His widow, Sally married Leonard Benton in 1849.
