Down near Springfield, Missouri in November 1861, Washington died and John buried his brother, then came home to Pilot Grove, Missouri. John went back with a wagon, disenterred his brother's grave and brought Washington's body home for burial. Washington was buried in the family cemetery known as the Sandy Hill Cemetery about three miles east of California, Missouri. The cemetery at this time was located on the family farm.
In March of 1917 there was an influenza epidemic that killed many people, both the young and the old. Elizabeth (Hill) Suggs, John Calvin, and Mary Anne (Suggs) Howard all died in one week.
