Born to Albert Levi and Carrie (Taylor) Borradaile. Family moved to Eaton, Ohio in 1897. Graduate of Miami University (class of 1908) where he was one of four founders of the national college fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau. He was the fraternity's first president and was also president of the Erodelphian Literary Society and his junior class. He was a chemist and worked in chemical sales in Florida where he also was admitted to the bar (without ever attending law school), though he never practiced. He later became chief chemist for the City of Charleston, WV and became an authority on toxicology, frequently being called as an expert witness in trials. He retired from the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC where he was chief chemist. He received one patent for a "method of making ammonium chloride and calcium sulphate."
He married Anna Laura Reeve of Eaton, Ohio in 1910 and together they had one son, Joseph R. Borradaile (1912-1999). His first marriage ended in divorce in 1936 and he married Letha Lively of Beckley, WV in 1937. In later years, he became very involved with the fraternity he helped to found and attended every National Convention between 1951 and his death. Two of Phi Kappa Tau's most significant awards are named for Borradaile.
