Missouri born, Samuel Compton headed West when he was 17 years old. He drove a wagon with 4 yoke of cattle in a train of 60 wagons and more than 300 people all Westward bound eventually coming to Prineville, Oregon. He married Nellie Kinder in 1899 in a second adventure into matrimony to which 5 children were born. He obtained homestead near Grizzly, and had a flock of sheep during the time of the Range Wars and is known to have endured threats which may have been the incentive to start sawmilling. After working at Powell's Mill he bought it with 1,000.00 down and by diligence and good management paid it off within a year.
The Compton home was built in 1909 just 3 miles east of Grizzly store. The homestead Certificate is #5442 signed by Theordore Rossevelt Feb 17, 1908. Compton built a temporary sawmill behind the house to provide lumber during construction of the house.
