From a letter by Judge John M. Hart regarding his father:

"He was detailed to the Ordinance Department very soon after enlisting and from there he was detailed to General Lindsay Walker's Headquarters. He was at Vicksburg during the time of its bombardment by the Federals, having been sent there with ammunition by the Ordinance Department. From General Walker he delivered dispatches to Genl. Lee at Farmville on April 3rd or 4th and was given a three day leave of absence. That is how he happened to be in Worsham, then Prince Edward Court House, when Genl. Sheridan passed through on his way to Appomattox. He joined Genl. Lee on the day of surrender at Appomattox and was there paroled. I remember seeing his parole, but I do not remember whether it was signed by Confederate or Federal officers. I remember distinctly the day he burned it, saying it would be of no further use."
