Frederick was born to Amanda Frederick and James Matthew Johnson. Frederick's father and fraternal grandparents were early settlers in Ringgold, Iowa. Fred's siblings were Mary Gertrude, Martha Matilda, Edward, Charles and Anna May. Frederick's parents were farmers.

Early in his wedded life with Lettie Sowash, Frederick was a farmer in Harrison, Missouri where Lettie was born. By 1910 he was a lumber mill manufacturer, still in Missouri.

Ten years later, the family was back in Ringgold, Iowa. Fred and his oldest son, were blacksmiths, work that Fred continued at least two more decades.

Fred and Lettie had 9 children including Lola Elsie, Myrtle May; Dwight Noel, Lawrence E, and Velma Jemim.

Fred died in 1958 at age 81. His wife, Lettie, lived for another 10 years.
