Ruby Urrutia of Fruita died Saturday of cancer in the home of her daughter, Dolores Bailey of Grand Junction. She was 85.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m .Wednesday in the McLean Funeral Home chapel in Fruita with the Rev. Eddie Scroggins officiating. There will also be Rebekah services. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grand Junction.
Mrs. Urrutia was a clerk in the Grand Junction Woolworth store for many years. She had also clerked at Hested’s Department Store.
She was born Jan. 3, 1906 to William Henry and Janet Jamieson Hedley in Sunnyside, Utah. She spent her childhood in Crested Butte, Moving there when she was 2, and graduated from high school there in 1924.
She married Pedro “Pete” Urrutia on Dec. 19, 1970, in Grand Junction. He died June 15, 1988, in Fruita.
She was previously married to Fred Conrad Gardner in Gunnison on June 7, 1924. He died July 11, 1965.
Mrs. Urrutia lived in Gunnison, Walden, Lafayette and Crested Butte prior to Grand Junction in 1959 and to Fruita in 1970.
She was a member of the Pine Tree Rebekah Lodge in Crested Butte and the Silver Bell Rebekah Lodge in Fruita for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Past Noble Grand Club in Fruita.
Her hobbies included fly fishing for which she was well-known in the Crested Butte area, her family, bridge, crocheting, picnicking and the outdoors.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Ruth Young of Alton, Wyo. and Dolores May Bailey of Grand Junction; a stepdaughter, Gloria Carman Harris of Moab, Utah; a sister, Marie Keller of Kennewick, Wash; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
a daughter, Ruby Darlene Gardner, two brothers, William Hedley and James Hedley, her stepfather, George Schaefer; Two half-brothers, George Schaefer Jr. and Guss Albert Schaefer; three sisters, Margaret Hinze, Violet Hedley, and a twin, Pearl Hedley are deceased.
