RICHARD M. ADELMAN, 79, of Bartlett, died Thursday at Methodist North after a long illness. He was a retired District Chief for the Memphis Fire Department and former Assistant Chief of the Bartlett Fire Department. Adelman was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rita Louise Mason Adelman. He attended Memphis State College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education. He also served two years in the United States Navy. He served on the Memphis Fire Department from 1953 to 1984, retiring as Chief of Training. In 1979, he was tapped to organize a new response unit to handle chemical emergencies in the city of Memphis. After retirement, Adelman worked as a fire service consultant and later as a fire apparatus salesman. He also spent many years as a trainer and advisor to several fire departments in the mid-south area. He served as a staff instructor at the Tennessee State Fire Service Training School, The National Fire Academy, and at Memphis State University. Adelman is survived by two sons, Alan "A. J." Adelman (wife, Margaret) of Bartlett, and Bill Adelman of Horn Lake ; two grandsons, Dr. Scott Adelman and Eric Adelman, both of Memphis. Visitation will be Sunday at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway from 2-6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Catholic Church of the Nativity, 5955 St. Elmo Avenue in Bartlett, with burial to follow at Memory Hill Gardens on Germantown Parkway. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Fire Museum of Memphis or to the building fund of the Catholic Church of the Nativity. (Published in The Commercial Appeal on 8/23/2008)
