William was born the son of Hans & Sophie Peters Kuehl. He grew up and attended school at Marne. He was in the Army during WWI, serving in France as a Prisoner of War Escort. He returned from service in October of 1919. William was married to Clara Gehl on July 25, 1922 at Raton, New Mexico. Following their marriage they farmed one year at Atlantic, IA, then moved to a farm in Graham Lakes Township. They farmed until they retired in 1960 and then moved into Fulda. Clara passed away January 24, 1976. William lived in Fulda at his own home until his health required him to become a resident, briefly, at the Slayton Manor Nursing Home, Slayton, and then Maple Lawn Nursing Home at Fulda in January of 1991. William was a board member of the Fulda Creamery and the Fulda Elevator. He was instrumental in helping the Senior Citizens Center become a reality. He was the office manager of the AAA, a forerunner to the ASCA, from 1932 to 1950.
