"Louella" Shailer was a full-blood Cherokee Indian, born in the Cherokee Indian Nation Territory in 1860. Louella's given Indian name was La-Ni-A-Pe-Na, pronounced "Lah-Nay-Ahh-Pay-Nah". She married William H. Shailer when she was 18 years old (William was 15 years older than his wife). William had fought for the Union in the 5th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry and returned to the Cherokee Indian Nation in 1868. Louella had a son on December 5th, 1880. His name was Edward James Shailer. Louella died in 1882 at the age of 22. Two years later, William married a non-Indian woman and they had six more children. William referenced his marriage to "Louellen" many times in testimony to the Commission of the Five Civilized Tribes. On October 15, 1902, William testified before the Commission to add Louella's son "Edward James" to the Delaware Cherokee Indian Rolls as a full-blood Delaware Cherokee. Edward James Shailer and his children's children are the only descendants of this wonderful woman.
