1941-2008


Walter R. "Marty" Martin, 66, of Milton, FL passed away Monday, August 18, 2008.
Marty was born December 6, 1941 in Lancaster, PA to Walter B. and H. Marie Armstrong Martin. He proudly served his country for a total of 45 years, 23 of these years were active duty ultimately as a Senior Chief Air Traffic Controller in the US Navy, the remainder 22 years at Whiting Field with Civil Service ultimately as an Aviation Community Planner. Marty was very involved in many community activities and served in many capacities including, a graduate of "First and the Best," Leadership Santa Rosa class of '86-87, serving as chairman and conducted 30+ weekend Leadership Training Programs for NW FL, a member of Santa Rosa Aviation Advisory Committee and served as chairman '85-88 and '92-96, served 2 years on the Board of Directors for the SRC Clean Community System, currently serving his 10th year on the Blackwater River State Forest Liaison Panel, also serving his 9th year on the Board of Directors for the Partnership for a Healthy Community, served on the Board for the Nike Golf Tournament at the Moors and was a Chairperson of the Seniors Tour Emerald Classic for many years, member of the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce since '87 twice serving on the Board of Directors and multiple terms as the chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, he was Secretary, Treasurer and then Chamber President in '95, he was the '97 Santa Rosa County Man of the Year and received the Hall of Fame Award in 2006, member of the Strategic Planning Initiative for Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton Counties, exofficio member of the Santa Rosa County Planning Board for Whiting Field and Eglin Air Force Base.
Survivors include his loving wife, Martha B. Martin; son, Walter Marvin Martin (Tonya Legean); daughter, Sheila Darlene Martin; grandchildren, Jasmine Marie Martin and Alyssa Renee Martin; three sisters, Victoria J. Murphy (Kerry) of Millersville, PA, Marjorie M. McCauley (Steven) of Drumore, PA and Martha I. Shetrompf (Keith) of Columbia, PA; four brothers, Stephen A. Martin (Diane) of Powell, WY, C. Wendell Martin (Joan) of Drumore, PA, Aldus D. Martin (Linda) of Drumore, PA and Timothy I. Martin (Joan) of Millersville, PA; aunt, M. Jean Martin of Lancaster, PA; uncle, Donald B. Martin of Holtwood, PA; also numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 12:30 - 2:00pm Thursday, August 21, 2008 at First United Methodist Church of Pace, 4540 Chumuckla Hwy, Pace, FL 32571 with Funeral Service to begin at 2:00pm with Rev. H. Byrd Mapoles officiating. Burial will follow at Crain Cemetery in Milton.
Pallbearers will be Brian Watkins, Wayne Nelms, Bob Alft, Sam Vickers, Joe Gordy, and Jack Wible.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gene Davis, Don Salter, Jim Hill and Bill Moore.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5401 Corporate Woods Dr., Pensacola, FL 32504.
HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
