Washington [D.C.], Oct 26--Mrs. W. A. Richards, wife of the commissioner of the general land office, is critically ill at her home in this city and hopes of her recovery have been abandoned by the physicians in attendance.

Mrs. Richards is well known in Cheyenne, where she resided for several years, her husband then being governor of Wyoming. During the past summer she came to Wyoming to recuperate her health at the Richards ranch at Redbank, Big Horn county. It was believed she greatly improved and she returned to Washington. The news of her critical illness now will come as a shock to her many friends in Cheyenne.

Wife of Former Governor Passes Away at Her Home in Washington, Will be Buried in Cheyenne.

Mrs. Harriet Alice Richards, the wife of the land office commissioner, W. A. Richards, who was formerly governor of Wyoming, died at her home in Washington at 11 o'clock last night.
The sad news was telegraphed to Senator Warren with a request that all possible preparations for the funeral and burial be made here.
Mrs. Richards resided in Cheyenne for a number of years, her husband being surveyor general for a term and later governor.
Her fine mind and beautiful character won for her a great host of friends to whom her death will be a sad loss.
Mrs. Richards was a member of the Baptist church of this city and was an indefatigable worker in its interest.
Besides her husband she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Guy McCreery of Brighton, Colo., and Misses Ruth and Edna at home.
Mrs. Richards was 49 years of age, and had been in excellent health until about a year ago when she was taken with heart trouble while in Washington. She had in a large measure recovered her health and was spending the summer at the Richards ranch at Red Bank when she was seized with another attack of the malady, which was very severe. With great difficulty she was taken to Omaha, where the lower altitude brought so beneficial a change that she was able to proceed to Washington. It was believed in Cheyenne that she had to a great extent recovered her health, when the news of a renewed illness was received, closely followed by the tidings of her death.
Mrs. Richards was state regent for Wyoming for the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a descendant of that branch of the Hunt family which served as minute men at Lexington and assisted in building Concord, Mass.
The funeral will take place in the Baptist church in this city in accordance with her request, and burial will be in the city cemetery.
It is expected that the remains will arrive in Cheyenne at noon on Sunday, and the funeral will follow immediately afterward.
