Born in Scottville, Illinois, John Hardin was one of fourteen children, they are listed below (three of them are linked -see *). He was the second son and fourth child of Stephan Albert and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (Turner) Hettick. In about 1881 the family moved from Illinois to Eastern Kansas and settled around Wolf River, Doniphan, Kansas. Here he met Daisy Dittemore, whose grandfather had moved from Missouri to the Wolf River area. "Hardy" and Daisy were married the 24th of February 1897.

The family Bible had both Gerald and Lawrence names, showing Gerald died at 6mo. in and Lawrence not long after he was born.
There is some question on just how many miscarriages Daisy had. We do know she did have a hard time and sadly lost 3 that we know of.
