She and her twin brother Frank were the first children of Robert and Minerva Parkins Dawson. Shortly after they were born the Dawsons moved to Pottawatomie county to farm. In the mid-1880s they moved to a their new farm which was a quarter-section, and later a half-section, three miles west of Castleton.

Fanny was a teacher for awhile, until she married Will Brown.

Her twin brother Frank was killed (a horse kicked him) in 1884 in the farmstead they'd left behind, as of yet unsold, in Pottawatomie County.
