Timothy Akin began his career shipping as a cook on the schooner CHOCTEAU, when he was only 12 years old. He stayed on her for 2 winters and then left to work on coasting vessels, beginning as a boy cook and ending as a master. In all his years at sea, he never went whaling.
In the 1860's just before the end of the Civil War, he met Joseph H. Jennings, who owned the east end of Nashawena, and was hired as caretaker. [In fact, the 1860 US Census for Norwalk Twp., Fairfield, CT shows Timothy Akin listed as a "Sailor".] He never again lived on the mainland, except for one year, until the 1890's. On the island he became noted as a life saver and wrecker i.e.- rescuer.
