He was for many years Clerk of the Chancery Court of the City of Richmond. It has been said of him that "he was always happy, always cheerful and always loving and beloved." He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. On July 11, 1876 he married Sue F. Crutchfield the daughter of George K. and Susan F. Crutchfield.

After attending Richmond College, he served as Deputy clerk of the County Court, Alexander County, Cairo, Illinois. After that he was cashier of the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad at Belmont, Missouri, until 1873, then returned to Richmond. He served successively as deputy clerk of the chancery court of Richmond, deputy collector of city taxes, assistant commissioner of revenue, and in 1888, elected Clerk of the Chancery Court.
