Son of John & Jerusha (Baker) Backus. Lived from before 1830 to after 1850 in Livonia, Livingston county, NY. In 1860 he was a resident of Springport, Cayuga county, NY. Married at least 4 times, first to Betsey Day; second to Hannah Fuller; third to Philena Stebbins; and fourth to Betsey (Brown) Berry the widow of Joseph Berry. Had several children the known are: Charles Backus, Hannah (Backus) Buskirk wife of Isaac Buskirk; Laura (Backus) Richmond the wife of Thomas Richmond; Cynthia (Backus) Richardson; Lorenza (Backus) Waters, the wife of William Waters (or Watrous); Harriet (Backus) Culver, the wife of John C Culver; Jerusha (Backus) Osborn, the wife of Henry Osborn or Osborne; Clinton Theron Backus.

In the name of God Amen. I, John Backus of the town of Groton in the County of Tompkins and State of New York aged 88 years being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make ordain publish and declare this to be may last Will and Testament. That is to say First after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged I give and bequeath to my daughter Jerusha Osborn the sum of Five hundred dollars.
Second. I give and bequeath all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate goods and chattels of what nature or kind to my daughters Laury Richmond, Cynthia Richardson, Lorenzer Waters, Harriet Culver and to the heirs of Hannah Buskirk to be divided equally amoung them all share and share alike my instruction being that the heirs of Hannah Buskirk deceased shall receive one share or one fifth of what remain after the bequest of five hundred dollars to to my daughter Jerusha Osborn is paid.
Second I make constitute and appoint William Morton of Groton Tompkins County and State of New York to be executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto sunscribed my name and affixed my seal the twenty ninth day of August in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and sixty one.

The heirs of his deceased daughter Hannah Buskirk are: Mrs. Mary Culbert; Mrs. Harriet or Hattie Russell wife of William Russell; Mrs Emma Hartson wife of Edwin Hartson; Mrs Emeline Shafer wife of Phineas Shafer; and a granson Jay L Sherd. Although all the documents indicate that John's daughter Lorenzer's married name is Waters, her signature indicates that she may be a Watrous.
