Mary Anne was brought by her parents to Johnson Co., IN, in September 1830. Though only fifteen years of age, she was already a tall and slender young lady with large brown eyes and a wealth of reddish-blond hair. On May 13, 1832, when not yet seventeen she was married to Henry Utterback, a young man who was ten years her senior.

They were the parents of Garrett, Rebecca, Nancy Jane, Eliza A., and an infant daughter who died at 8 days of age.

Before she was twenty-six, Mary Anne was stricken by one of those pernicious types of malaria fever which even her youth and strength could not resist and she passed away August 1, 1841. The happy home was broken up; the children were taken into the home of their grandparents, Garret and Nancy Davis Terhune, where they lived for some years until their father remarried.
