EAST LAKE - Emmett Eugene Smith, 86, died Friday, July 4, in a Pitt County hospital. He was born in East Lake and was a marine mechanic for NCDOT. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and attended East Lake Holiness church. He was the son of the late Cleveland & Lavenia Mann Smith and husband of the late Thelma Spruill Smith. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Gilda Smith; a sister, Syble "Sister" Smith; and a brother, Curtis "Buddy" Smith. He is survived by three sons: Eugene Smith & wife Gwen of Chesapeake, VA, Bryan Smith & wife Marsha, of Columbia & "Satch" Smith and wife Paula of East Lake; a sister, Rita Midgett of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers: Richard Smith of East Lake & Wiley Smith of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren: Paula Cannon, Trisha Smith, Cleve Smith & Meredith Smith; five great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Services at Twiford Colony Chapel Tuesday, July 8 w/ Rev. Anthony Ralph officiating.
