Pioneer Dies

Levi C. Patrick, the well known pioneer of this valley, died at Durango on Wednesday afternoon, January 31, 1917, of cancer of the stomach.

For a number of years, Mr. Patrick has complained of his stomach, but his condition did not become severe until almost two months ago, and then went to Durango for treatment. But his ailment was incurable.

Mr. Patrick was a native of Indiana, born about sixty years ago. He came to Pine river in the later seventies, and lived here since that time, with the exception of a few years residence at Pagosa Springs, where he served one term as a county commissioner. For twelve years or more he has resided with his family on their valuable ranch two miles north of Ignacio.

The family consists of the wife and three children, Edna, Leslie and Milton; the second child died in infancy at Pagosa Springs. The other known near relatives are his brothers Wash of Durango and Marion of Denver, his sister Mrs. Preston Bell of Silverton. One brother is buried in the Bayfield cemetery and a sister in a Durango cemetery.

Mr. Patrick was known by all his neighbors and acquaintances as an honest and upright citizen. He was a model husband and father. The Patrick and Blade families have been friends for twenty-five years, and we can testify to his great worth. The loved ones have the deep sympathy of an entire community [?] their great bereavement.

The body arrives this forenoon at Ignacia on the train and funeral services will be conducted at that place immediately after its arrival. Interment will follow in the Bayfield cemetery, the [c----] arriving here about two o'clock. Services at the grave will be in charge of the Odd Fellows of Ignacio and the Woodmen of the World at Bayfield, of which orders deceased was a valuable member.
