Jesse D. Atkins, 81, of 3517 Asbury Road, died Saturday morning, Aug. 16, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Resurrection Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Mausoleum, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1926, in Lemons, Mo., son of Forrest and Marie (McConnell) Atkins. He married Mary Gang on July 1, 1950, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rock Island, Ill.

Jesse served his country in the Army for two years as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.

He was employed as an advanced engineering analyst at John Deere in Moline and Dubuque for 32 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish.

Jesse loved woodworking, gardening and the outdoors. For several years, he was one of the top billiards players in Dubuque. He dearly loved his family and was proud of them and their accomplishments. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by those who loved him.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, of Dubuque; a son, Jeffrey (Karen) Atkins, of Dubuque; three daughters, Kathy (Brian) Downey, of Davenport, Iowa, Linda Sandberg, of St. Charles, Minn., and Marsha Atkins, of Davenport; nine grandchildren, Lisa Atkins Gasper, Gregory Atkins, Daniel Atkins, Laura Downey Swinehart, Holly Downey Byers, Timothy Downey, Mattie Sandberg, Katie Sandberg and Dane Atkins; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Frank Rouse; and a sister-in-law, Velma Atkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter at birth; and a brother, James M. Atkins.
