Obituary for Donald R. Ruyle

Donald R. Ruyle of Dripping Springs passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family at Christopher House on August 13, 2008 from Parkinson's disease. Don was born in Grandfield, Oklahoma, on March 18, 1924, to Roma R. Ruyle and Ella Saunders Ruyle. He spent most of his childhood in Duncan, Oklahoma. The family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1940, and he graduated from Arlington Heights High School.

Don entered the army during World War II in December, 1942, and served 3 ½ years in the 96th Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific theatre where he received multiple decorations.

Don attended NTAC, now known as UT-Arlington, where he played on the golf team. He majored in geology which resulted in a lifetime hobby of rock collecting. After working a few years in oil exploration, he met and married the love of his life, Janice Reynolds: a love and marriage that has lasted 60 years. Don and Janice settled in Wichita Falls, Texas, and after a short career in the insurance business, he opened his own glass company. In 1973, Don sold his business and moved to Austin, Texas, where he received his real estate license to sell farm and ranch properties. Before he retired in 1989, Don put together a limited partnership to purchase a ranch in Evant, Texas. Don managed the IO Ranch until his health prevented him to do so. The ranch is primarily family owned now and has become the place for many family and friend gatherings. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, especially hunting dove and quail with his birddogs. He also had a great interest in pecan trees and was very proud that he successfully grafted paper shells onto native trees. The family has many pecan gathering memories at the ranch. Don was an excellent cook and passed this passion along to his children. After Janice retired in 1999, they moved to Dripping Springs where they enjoyed gardening, fishing, and deer and bird watching. He enjoyed a variety of music.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; sister, Nelda Blake of Denton; son Stan Ruyle of San Antonio; son and daughter-in-law, Camille and Steve Ruyle of Wichita Falls; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mike Thomas of Spicewood; son and daughter-in-law, Mary and Jeff Ruyle of Dripping Springs; grandchildren Tanya and Charlie Ruyle; Allison, Melanie, and Valerie Ruyle; Scott and Kelly Thomas; Caroline and Ryan Ruyle; great grandchildren Hannah and Peyton Ruyle; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Seton Main ICU for the excellent level of care. Dad loved it when we were all together and we want to thank Christopher House Hospice for allowing us to do this and for the excellent care they provided in his final days. We would especially like to thank the nurses and staff at Hill Country Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dripping Springs for taking care of Dad for the last 4 ½ years. We feel blessed that they loved "Papa Ruyle" and his dry wit and sense of humor.

Visitation will be at Dripping Springs United Methodist Church, 28900 Ranch Road 12, Dripping Springs, TX at 3:00 PM with funeral services at 4:00 PM Saturday, August 16. Burial services will follow at Phillips Cemetery in Dripping Springs. Pallbearers will be the eight grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers are John Barnard of Wichita Falls, Texas, Bill Anderson, Cory Scarbrough, Bill Feurerbacher, and E. Burton Eubanks.

Donnie Ruyle, 4th Cousin of Donald Roma Ruyle.
