He was born in Cumberland county, Kentucky, Sept. 11, 1813, and came to this state when he was 16 years of age. He grew to manhood on his father's little farm and continued the tilling of the soil until 1846. He was married in Salisbury township Jan. 18, 1837, to Nancy Duncan who survives him. In the fall of 1846 he removed by wagon to Jefferson county, Iowa, where he entered 150 acres of land and improved and operated it until 1859. He returned to this county and took charge of the farm of his father-in-law until the death of the latter, when he purchased 120 acres of the estate, but afterwards sold it. When his health became so poor that he could not actively engage in farming duties, he removed to a plat of land near Salisbury. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Sarah Bottorff, Sydney D., James S., Nathan C., Marshall B., Ely Ann, Laura and Martha F., all living near Salisbury.
The funeral will occur at 11 o'clock this morning at the residence.
