John E. (known as Jeb) was adopted in Germany by his parents, Agnes B. and Wilford A. Baugh. Agnes and Wilford were married in Vienna, Austria on Saturday, July 26, 1947. Stars & Stripes newspaper clippings show Lt. Wilford A. Baugh was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany between Nov. 6, 1947 and presumably until at least August, 1955 (last clipping).

A Pan American Airways flight manifest dated December 4, 1948 shows his parents traveling from Stuttgart to New York. A separate USNS manifest dated November 18, 1955 shows Agnes B. and John E. Baugh traveling from Bremerhaven, Germany to New York. Agnes and Wilford presumably adopted John sometime between 1952 and 1955.

The 1968 Enterprise (Alabama) yearbook shows sophomore, John Baugh, as an outstanding athlete receiving letter club honors. The 1969 yearbook shows him as a junior in the R.O.T.C. as Sgt. Baugh.
