She was a daughter Jens Peter and Hannah L. (Nypan) Sørensen-Sorensen. Her mother died from influenza in Berkeley, CA on 25 Dec 1918, and she was sent to live with an aunt and uncle, while her four siblings continued to live with their father. He died in El Cerrito, CA on 13 Sep 1939, and his obituary named only the other four children. Sometime prior to the 1940 Census she married O. V. Lewis and must have divorced him in 1940 or 1941, as she married Cletus Thomas Byrnes on 10 Oct 1941 in San Francisco, CA.
