His first job was at John Maurer's Sporting Goods store in Cadillac, He later worked at St. John's table factory, then went to work for Chris Craft Boat Co. there he worked on the landing barges during the Second World War. After the war he went to work for Peterson & Westburg's Construction Co in Cadillac. In 1951 he bought out the glass part of the business of Peterson & Westburg Construction Co., Known as Garn Glass Co. and had the business with his brother, Stewart, as partner, until 1977 when they sold it and retired.
He was a member of Cadillac Free Methodist Church and served on the Bd of Trustees and as Sunday School Supt. He was also a Gideon member. He served on the Haring Township Zoning Board.
He played softball when he was young, but especially loved fishing and hunting. AS his grandsons got older he taught them to enjoy fishing and hunting also.

Gerald B. Garn married Mary Eva Cochrane on October 24, 1934. Age 81 years at death.
